Sarah and Zac Adler - Tulsa OK:
Every parent's worst nightmare just happened to me...
My baby boy almost drowned last night.
Zac and I were doing what most couples do, we had a babysitter for the evening so that we could go out to a nice kid-free dinner. Even though it was in the evening, and even though we told her repeatedly that they are not allowed outside...our sitter still let my 2 boys go outside to play (unsupervised in the backyard - with a pool - at night) while she went upstairs to put the baby to bed.
Within a few minutes, Gabriel tripped and fell into the deepest part of the pool - with all of his clothes and shoes on.
As my sweet three-year-old's little body sank to the bottom of the pool...he miraculously held his breath, floated to the top, flipped on his back and kicked to the side of the pool. While Andrew, his HERO of an older brother, stayed stoically calm - ran to the side of the pool - and pulled him out to safety once he reached the side.
The only reason, I can still snuggle and kiss my sweet little boy, is because before we moved into our new house (which has a pool) he completed a week-long course of survival swim lessons. It was only four days of lessons - each 30 minutes long - focused completely on how to survive if an accident happens. These are the only swim lessons Gabriel has ever taken...and they saved his life.
My dear friend Rebecca Seefeldt Thompson is the supermom who recommended I sign up for the Survival Swim lessons earlier this summer. Coach Kem Morrow (who teaches these lessons) is incredible and is usually booked out a year in advance...but by some miracle, he had a spot open for Gabriel this summer.
As I sit here typing this, I am drenched in gratitude for the reality that I live in today...it is not lost on me how different and tragic my world could've looked.
The **only** reason Gabriel is still here is because of Coach Kem Morrow and the lessons he taught my baby boy.
As moms, we work so tirelessly to perfect and protect our children's worlds...we try to do everything "just right"...for example, we go to swim lessons, dance lessons, music lessons, great schools, Girl Scouts, karate, tutoring, doctors, dentists, etc. etc.
We all know the list is endless...but sometimes it's the simplest little things that can sneak past us. We tend to think that if we have our kiddos in regular swim lessons, then they're going to be just fine...but unfortunately that doesn't always protect them when they accidentally fall in a pool (with all their clothes and shoes on) suddenly and unexpectedly - at night.
The reason I'm choosing to share this story is so that other moms can possibly avoid such a terrifying scenario...and maybe another sweet little one can be saved like Gabriel. As parents, we make so many decisions for our child's life...and I can honestly say I've never been happier for the decision to take survival swim lessons with Coach Kem Morrow.
This grateful Mama is still able to hug and kiss her sweet baby boy today because of those lessons. ðŸ™ðŸ»â¤ï¸
